Kingston State College offers a broad and flexible range of senior subject options designed to cater to every learner's pathway. Our curriculum aligns with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and provides opportunities across General, Applied, and Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses.

Our Senior Pathways Handbook gives students and parents/carers detailed information about subject choices and future pathways.​

General Subjects

General subjects are academically focused and prepare students for tertiary study.
Key features include:

  • Developed from QCAA syllabus documents.
  • Summative internal assessments endorsed by the QCAA.
  • Standards of assessment reviewed and accredited by the QCAA.
  • External exams conducted in Year 12, Term 4.
  • Completing a minimum of four General subjects contributes towards ATAR eligibility.
  • Recorded on the Senior Statement.

Applied Subjects

Applied subjects are practical, hands-on courses designed to prepare students for further training or employment.
Key features include:

  • Developed from QCAA Applied Syllabuses.
  • Vocationally oriented and focused on real-world skills.
  • Study plans approved by the QCAA.
  • Only one Applied subject can contribute to ATAR eligibility (in combination with four General subjects).
  • Recorded on the Senior Statement.


VET Courses

Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses provide nationally recognised qualifications and practical workplace skills.
Key features include:

  • Deliver nationally accredited qualifications at various competency levels.
  • Successful completion results in a Qualification Certificate.
  • One Certificate III (or higher) can contribute to ATAR eligibility alongside four General subjects.
  • Contribute credits towards the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) (up to 8 points for Certificate III or higher).
  • Delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs).
  • Recorded on the Senior Statement.

Year 10 Curriculum

Year 10 acts as a bridge between junior and senior schooling, helping students prepare for success in Years 11 and 12.

Students:

  • Explore a wide range of subject areas to help them make informed decisions about future studies.
  • Participate in a Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan review to refine and finalise learning pathways towards the QCE or QCIA.

Year 11 and 12 Curriculum

After completing Year 10, students move into senior pathways that contribute to either the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) or Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA).

  • QCE: Queensland's senior school qualification, awarded to eligible students (usually at the end of Year 12).
  • QCIA: Recognises the achievements of students on individualised learning programs due to specific learning difficulties or impairments.

Subject Selection in Years 11 and 12

  • All students must study one English and one Mathematics subject.
  • Students choose four additional subjects to complete their timetable.
  • To be ATAR-eligible, students must study at least six subjects over two years (including five General subjects). They may include one Applied or Certificate III (or higher) VET course as part of their six subjects.
